McLain State Park

McLain State Park offers two miles of sand beach on Lake Superior. Visitors can also enjoy a variety of activities in the park: fishing, windsurfing, berry picking, beachcombing, sight-seeing and hunting. The sunsets at McLain State Park are spectacular and the view of the lighthouse is magnificent.

Area Information: The parks location between Calumet and Hancock makes a fine base for visitors to visit attractions such as abandoned shafthouses, tram cars, "poor rock" piles and ghost towns. Visitors of the Keweenaw are invited to explore the newly created "Keweenaw National Historic Park," which has preserved relics from the days when "Copper was King!"

Picnic Area - Picnic tables and fire pits/grills: Horseshoe pits are also available at both picnic areas. Fire pits/grills available.
Picnic Shelter(s): Two of the parks picnic shelters have fireplaces and all three shelters have large grills available for cooking. Shelters can be reserved up to a year in advance by calling 1-800-447-2757 or visiting
Playground - These play areas offer a variety of playground equipment for children.: There are two locations of playground equipment.
Lighthouse: The Keweenaw Waterway Lighthouse is located near the park and one of the attractions of the area.

Concession/Store: The park store carries most campground supplies and groceries. Local crafts and souvenirs are also available. Stop in for one of our handmade waffle ice cream cones any day of the week during the camping season. Firewood and ice are also available at the park.

Activities at McLain State Park

Swimming: Two miles of Lake Superior shoreline provide a sandy beach for swimming, rockcombing and wind surfing.
Alcohol Restrictions Apply: Alcohol may not be possessed nor consumed within the park on the day in the month of September proclaimed by the offical organizing body and commonly referred to as "K-Day" (Keweenaw Day).

Cross Country Ski: Trails are groomed. Snow shoeing is also a popular activity at McLain State Park.
Pet-Friendly Area: A portion of the Lake Superior shoreline at F.J. McLain State Park is pet-friendly. Pets must be on a six foot leash and under an owners immediate control at all times. All pet waste must be properly disposed of in trash receptacles.

Electrical Service:
Mini Cabin: The cabins are designed to sleep four with bunks and mattresses provided. Included are electric lights, heaters, a hot plate, table and chairs and a picnic table and fire circle outside. Occupants of the mini-cabin have access to all the conveniences found in the campground. Please call ahead for reservations. No pets allowed in cabin area.
